Dunkin'novation

Last week, Dunkin' Donuts introduced a new food item, Sausage Pancake Bites. These items sound like a normal breakfast item, but for a chain that has prided itself on donuts (especially Munchkins), people have been drawing the comparison between the pancake bites and Munchkins. Many websites have dubbed these items as "Meat Munchkins," which do not sound too appetizing. I personally do not think these items will last on the menu, especially if the term "Meat Munchkin" sticks. Innovative? Yes; but successful? Probably not. To see a video of a brave man trying one of these "Meat Munchkins," click here.

This type of calorie-loaded, stomach-churning innovation appears to be a trend. It remind me of KFC's Double Down (a layer of cheese suck between two fried pieces of chicken) and Burger King's pizza burger. Perhaps research suggests that consumers are seeking comfort food as they struggle with the economic recession?

If that is the case, then this is certainly comfort food, as 6 "Meat Munchkins" are 600 calories and 42 grams of fat!

I am wondering what inspired the creation of this calorie loaded creation. Is there some research being done by Dunkin' suggesting that consumers want an item like this, or did this "innovation" come from a consumers idea? Either way, it can't be good for our country's skyrocketing obesity rates.

Meat Munchkins remind me of alot of the items on Burger King's menu. It seems alot of there new products don't last very long. The mass public does not seem very adventurous when it comes to new innovation in food.
