Apple Software Becomes Open Source

It's interesting to see that a tech firm as powerful as Apple, who is notorious for closed software programs like OSX, has joined the open source movement. Apple recently made their software for compressing music files open source.

What is Apple's goal? Why did they make this program open source?

Interesting. Perhaps they are struggling with this task and rely on crowd-sourcing and the innovation that comes along with it, or they are taking an initiative that furthers their position in the market as the anti-PC anti-Microsoft company (since those companies appear to be anti open source).

It seems that Apple is learning from Microsoft's struggles in terms of trying to battle against Open Source software. Sometimes it is easier to join them than trying to beat them.
