Co-Creation at Ford

On the heels of using social media to market their Fiesta and Fusion cars, Ford is planning to go a step farther and open up their Sync in-car software development platform to contributions from universities and other developers. Read more in this FastCompany article.

    That sounds really cool. It seems that more and more companies will leverage social media to engage customer innovation in new product development.

    It's pretty much mandatory for car companies to include technologies like Sync in their vehicles because the automobile industry is in relatively bad shape. I feel that the standard has been raised now that most companies have over-marketed the hybrid and eco-friendly features of their vehicles. Car companies are looking to set themselves apart from other companies in new ways, and hence this addition is all but necessary to survive.

    Luxury companies like Lexus and Land Rover are adding sophisticated IR sensors while Chevy, Nissan, and Ford are adding convenience technologies such as Sync.
